The School of Physical Sciences develops and delivers undergraduate qualifications in physics, astronomy, planetary science and closely related disciplines. Our curriculum is informed by world-leading research and designed for students interested in understanding the physical Universe or developing careers that use scientific, mathematical, computational and analytical skills.
Students develop theoretical understanding alongside problem-solving, data analysis, scientific communication and practical skills. Experimental learning is supported by interactive activities and facilities in our award-winning OpenSTEM Labs.

The astronomy and planetary science route through the BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences explores the Universe beyond Earth. Topics extend from the exploration and evolution of the Solar System to stars, exoplanets, galaxies, black holes, cosmology and the search for life elsewhere.
This route combines scientific theory with observational evidence, data analysis and practical investigations. It is accredited by the Society for Natural Sciences and recognised by the Institute of Physics.

The Master of Physics is an integrated master’s degree combining undergraduate and postgraduate-level study. Students can specialise in Physics or Astrophysics with Space Science and engage with advanced topics linked closely to the School’s research.
As an integrated master’s qualification, it normally begins at undergraduate level. It includes advanced study and an extended project through which students develop research, analysis and scientific communication skills.
Several physics qualifications offer different Stage 1 routes according to a student’s existing mathematical knowledge. Prospective students should review the entry guidance and use the readiness quizzes to identify an appropriate starting point.
