Professional biography

Dr. Alexander Mikroyannidis is a Senior Research Fellow (Associate Professor) at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi), The Open University, UK. He holds a PhD in Informatics from Manchester Business School, an MPhil in Computation from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), and a BEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece.

Dr. Mikroyannidis is an internationally recognised researcher in AI-enhanced education, technology-enhanced learning, and digital innovation in higher education. His work focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel educational technologies that empower learners and educators in online, distance, and lifelong learning contexts. His publications have received more than 2,000 citations and achieved an h-index of 23. He serves on the editorial boards of leading journals, including Open Learning, Cogent Education, and Research in Learning Technology.

Research interests

The research of Dr. Mikroyannidis explores how emerging technologies can transform teaching, learning, and curriculum development. His recent work focuses on the responsible integration of AI into education, investigating how AI can enhance learner autonomy, personalisation, self-regulated learning, and metacognitive development. Additionally, he is leading research into the use of AI to support curriculum design, educational content creation, and the production of distance learning materials. His work has contributed to the development of AI-powered tools that assist educators in designing high-quality learning experiences while maintaining pedagogical integrity, inclusivity, and academic standards. Beyond AI, his research spans open education, lifelong learning, blockchain-enabled credentials, and innovative approaches to digital skills development.

Teaching interests

Dr. Mikroyannidis has extensive experience in the design and development of digital learning resources, including Open Educational Resources (OERs), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Badged Open Courses (BOCs), eBooks, and AI-enhanced learning environments. His work has reached diverse learner communities worldwide through open and distance learning initiatives. As an International Expert in Distance Learning for the Portuguese Agency for the Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), he evaluates distance learning programmes and advises universities on quality assurance, digital pedagogy, and the effective adoption of emerging technologies.

Impact and engagement

Dr. Mikroyannidis has established strategic partnerships with leading organisations to translate educational research into real-world impact. His collaboration with Cisco Networking Academy, one of the world's largest digital education networks, led to the development of PT Anywhere, an innovative platform enabling learners to perform network simulations on any device. The platform supported large-scale remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic and was featured in the UK Government’s Digital Skills Toolkit.

More recently, his impact activities have centred on the practical application of AI in education. He works closely with academic institutions, policymakers, and industry partners to explore how AI can support student success, improve curriculum development processes, and enhance the scalability of high-quality online education. His research has also informed innovations in blockchain-enabled lifelong learning and digital credentials through projects such as QualiChain, where he led the deployment and evaluation of decentralised qualifications across education and employment contexts.

External collaborations

Throughout his career, Dr. Mikroyannidis has led and contributed to numerous European and nationally funded research projects, securing external funding and building international networks across academia, industry, and the public sector. His project portfolio includes SAGE-RAI, DEL4ALL, QualiChain, OpenLang Network, SlideWiki, Institute of Coding, HUB4NGI, FORGE, weSPOT, ROLE, OpenScout, EUCLID, CASPAR, and PARMENIDES. A recurring theme across these collaborations is the exploration of how emerging technologies can democratise access to education and foster lifelong learning. Through his international collaborations, Dr. Mikroyannidis continues to advance the vision of human-centred AI in education, where intelligent technologies empower learners and educators at scale.
