About

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is part of the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at The Open University. We are a vibrant and inclusive community of academic and research staff, research students, professional services staff and associate lecturers based at the University’s campus in Milton Keynes and throughout the UK.

We carry out world-leading research across the mathematical sciences. Our research encompasses applied mathematics and theoretical physics, combinatorics and algebra, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, statistics, mathematics education, the history of mathematics, and scholarship in teaching and learning. This breadth of expertise supports interdisciplinary collaboration and enables mathematics and statistics to contribute to challenges in science, technology, medicine, public health, education and wider society.

Our staff deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules and qualifications in mathematics, statistics and data analysis to students across the UK and around the world. We also contribute mathematical and statistical teaching to qualifications in computing, engineering, economics, physics and Combined STEM. Our teaching is informed by current research and is designed to develop logical thinking, quantitative reasoning, data analysis, modelling and problem-solving skills.

The School supports an active postgraduate research community, with research students contributing to seminars, workshops, conferences and collaborative projects. We also provide opportunities for undergraduate and master’s students to gain experience of mathematical and statistical research through supervised projects and research bursaries.
