Embraced by a growing number of the world\u2019s leading research and cultural heritage organizations, the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) provides an open framework for organizations to publish their image-based resources, to be viewed, cited, annotated, and more by any compatible image-viewing application. The IIIF data model is exposed by two APIs. The image API returns pixels – regions of images at the requested scale, rotation, quality and format. The Presentation API provides metadata to drive viewing experiences, allowing book readers, image viewers and annotation tools to present rich user interfaces.

The IIIF is closely related to the W3C Web Annotation data model, which provides a vocabulary for annotating web pages, documents, images, videos, audio and more. The talk will also look at the IIIF presentation API could be extended to media other than images. The Presentation API can be a container for other media, such as videos, and those videos could carry annotations that identify “clips”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
