The latter is used to evaluate and inform The Open University\u2019s institutional practices around open and distance education while educational research is used to evaluate and inform teaching practices within the higher education sector. The two processes often overlap and, in some cases, may be focussed on the teaching of a specific subject but many are organised through two initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first initiative is the STEM Faculty\u2019s scholarship centre, known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/\">eSTEeM<\/a>, the OU centre for STEM pedagogy. Some exemplar projects are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/supporting-students\/evaluating-the-impact-qualification-based-approach-student\">Evaluating the impact of a qualification based approach to student engagement and success in engineering study<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/other\/enhancing-systems-thinking-practice-the-workplace\">Enhancing Systems Thinking in Practice at the Workplace<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/other\/impact-study-the-taught-mscs-technology-related-subjects-students%E2%80%99\">Impact study of the taught MScs in Technology related subjects on students\u2019 employability<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/technologies-stem-learning\/are-we-making-progress-progression-through-learners%E2%80%99\">Are we making progress? Progression through learners\u2019 interaction in OpenStudio across a qualification<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/technologies-stem-learning\/the-impact-technology-the-teaching-and-assessment-\">The impact of technology on the teaching and assessment of \u2018systems diagrams\u2019<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is through a university wide research area known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research\/themes\/opentel\">OpenTEL<\/a>.
